A Bitcoin Layers Overview Created by the Bitcoin Frontier Fund
The BFF releases a breakdown of different Bitcoin scaling projects
Hello Bitcoiners,
Welcome back to the BBA Newsletter.
We’ve been working to better organize the newsletter. For the time being, we’re separating the newsletter into two major buckets of news:
Meta Protocols: Think Ordinals, BRC20s, Runes
Bitcoin Layers: Think Lightning, Stacks, Rootstock, Liquid, BOB, etc.
This framework will likely change, but we believe it captures two current buckets of how people build on Bitcoin.
Let’s dive in.
The Bitcoin Frontier Fund released a chart showing the different Bitcoin scaling projects (Bitcoin Layers). The landscape is nuanced, and this chart gives a clearer picture.
An interesting component of the chart is the categories BFF decides to include. For example, transaction fees paid to miners (yes/no), programming language, settles on Bitcoin (yes/no/hashed on L1), etc.
Meta-Protocols
Layer 1 Foundation, founded by BRC20 Creator Domo, announced its organization of a new BRC20 governance structure — including appointing several leading BRC20 indexers as collaborators.
XVerse, a Bitcoin Wallet, launches Runes testnet. Runes is a new fungible token protocol coming to Bitcoin. Casey Rodarmor, the creator of Ordinals, proposed it as a simplified version of the BRC20 standard.
Layers and Rollups
DLC.Link completes a funding round. DLC.Link aims to be the first native Bitcoin cross-chain protocol that leverages Discreet Log Contracts (DLCs). Using DLCs, dlcBTC does not require Bitcoin deposits to be held with a custodian or bridged to a separate blockchain.
XLink completes a funding round. XLink is a Bitcoin Bridge created by the ALEX Lab Foundation. XLink “aggregates liquidity across Bitcoin L2s, with an aim to bring ‘native-like’ DeFi experience to Bitcoin.” The following screenshot from their website gives a good picture of how it works.
Sovryn, a Bitcoin DeFi application, is expanding to Ethereum with the help of Building on Bitcoin (BOB). Sovryn has been building Bitcoin DeFi since 2020 and offers lending, borrowing, and more on Bitcoin.
